What types of glass are used for recycling?

Stages and processes of glass recycling

Glass is refined in an industrial and precise process. The stages are as follows:

1. Collection of used glass:

In this stage, used products and discarded glass are collected. As mentioned earlier, not all glass reenters the recycling cycle. Ones with chemical and medical uses get buried due to their hazardous nature. If people separate their waste at the source, the speed of this stage will be higher.

2. Transfer to recycling centers:

The collected products from the previous stage are transferred to recycling centers by specialized transport machines.

3. Sorting types of glass:

Different types of glass must be sorted. Colorless and transparent glasses, green glasses, and amber glasses are separated from each other, as recycling all of them together leads to producing a poorly shaped, cloudy, and ugly product.

4. Crushing and separation:

In this stage, colored glasses get crushed into a cullet. Breaking the glasses into a cullet is done to facilitate the recycling process. Moreover, materials like food items, metal parts, used adhesives, and other excess materials that have no place in the recycling process get separated from the glasses in this stage.

5. Melting and glass composition:

In the next stage, it’s time for glass melting. The crushed glasses are melted in a particular heating device at this stage. Additionally, in most cases, compounds like silica, sodium carbonate (soda ash), and lime are added to the melted glass. The use of these compounds varies in different centers.

6. Producing new products:

The melted glass is extracted from the machine. After that, it is cooled and shaped to produce new products. This way, the glass returns to the consumption cycle.

Applications

Glass can be recycled and reused several times. However, the type of product obtained from its recycling depends on whether the recycling process is open-loop or closed-loop.

Closed-loop: Recycled products in a closed-loop cycle never go to waste. Materials in this cycle get used multiple times, and waste is minimal. The recycled glass in the closed-loop cycle is used to produce new bottles, containers, asphalt, and glass beads for various purposes, such as sandblasting machines.

Open-loop: Glass recycled in an open-loop cycle cannot be recycled again. The product produced in this cycle is single-use and goes to waste. Some applications of glass products in the open-loop cycle include producing fiberglass, sandpaper, and transparent and glossy colors like street and road markings.

Glass has been one of the more useful human products for centuries, and its use dates back thousands of years. With industrial expansion and technological advancement, the possibility of returning this product to the natural cycle has also been provided. Glass is highly productive because of its ability to return to the natural cycle multiple times.

Due to economic savings, reducing continuous use of non-renewable raw materials, preserving environmental health, and reusing disposable products, recovering this product is essential. Other benefits of recovering this material include enhancing the beauty of urban environments due to the applicable use of waste and creating employment. Glass is recovered in two open and closed cycles. Recycled glass in the closed-loop cycle has the potential for multiple uses. However, recycled glass in the open-loop cycle is single-use.
